Guruvayoor Temple of Thrissur is a very important and famous pilgrimage. The temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, who is worshipped as Lord Krishna, an avatar of Lord Vishnu. The town where this temple is located is known by the name of Thrissur Guruvayoor. The temple of Guruvayur in Trichur, Kerala is worth a visit and just a mere sight of the Lord’s idol in its grandeur is enough to make you feel pure and blessed. The temple follows a strict decorum and only Hindus are allowed inside. The temple is said to have been built by Guru (preceptor of Gods) and Vayu (God of winds). The idol is built out of a rare stone called Patala Anjana. The idol of Lord Vishnu is shown having four arms, carrying a conch, a discus (Sudharshana Chakra), a mace and a lotus and is decked with a Tulasi (basil leaves) and rose garlands and pearl necklaces. The walls of the main temple shrine are decorated with splendid paintings that depict stories from the life of Lord Krishna. There are many paintings that belong to the 17th century that adorn the sacred walls here. The roof and two doors inside the temple are covered with gold. In the eastern side in front of the temple entrance stands a tall Dhwajasthambam (flag post), which measures 33 meters and is entirely gold plated. Right adjacent to it, one can find a 7-meter high pillar of lamps known as the Dipastambham. This magnificent pillar of lamps has 13 circular receptacles on top of each other that look brilliant when lit in the evening. Other than the main idol of Lord Vishnu, one can also find idols of Lord Ganesha, Lord Ayyappa and Goddess Durga. The temple holds the maximum number of weddings and “Annaprasanam”, which means feeding rice to a child for the first time.

The beautiful city of Thrissur (originally called as Trichur), is one of the oldest in Kerala State and is mainly famous for its ancient shiva temple dedicated to Vadakkunathan, which is situated on an elevated hillock right in the centre of the city. The temple attracts thousands of devotees adn visitors from all over teh land. Like many South Indian Temples, it has a solemn atmosphere, associated with age and centureis of devotion, which we do not find in many of the temples of North India . Once the capital of old Cochin State , Thrissur changed hands from the Zamorin of Cochin to Tippu Sultan of Mysore in the 18th century. In the ancient days the place was known as “Tiru Shiva Perur’ or the town with the name of Lord Shiva. Many years ago, the vast open region around the temple was a beautiful plantation forest of teak treees called ‘Tekkinkadu’. Today, the forest is totally cleared but the tranquil atmosphere of the temple prevails all round. With it is associated the famous Parasurama, the incarnation of Maha Vishnu, who is said to be the founder of this Shiva temple. The name of Parasurama is always with Kerala, as is the naem fo sage Agastya with the Pandyans in Tamilnadu. According to local tradition, it is believed that the great Kerala teacher Adi Shankaracharya was also connected with this temple. Aryamba, the mother of Shankara Worshipped Shiva at this temple to beget a son. It is said that she used to walk to Thrissur from Kalady. The first feeling one gets on entering through the gates of the temple is the incredible space and light. The elegant architectural style that is unique to Kerala becomes evident. As a major departure from all other South Indian temples with their towering ‘gopurams’, the temples of Kerala are not imposing in appearance.

The Thrissur Sakthan Thampuran Palace located in Kerala is an important landmark in the town and also has much historical significance. It is a major tourist attraction and all history lovers will definitely want to go through this magnificent piece of historical significance. The great ruler Raja Rama Varma built Trichur Shakthan Thampuran Palace. The Archaeological Department of the state now looks after the maintenance of the palace. The Raja was an able ruler who achieved great heights during his reign and is held in high esteem by the people of Kerala even today. The palace has been constructed in a unique combination of Dutch and traditional Kerala style of architecture. Very few structures in Kerala have such a unique combination that has been skillfully blended together to make such a magnificent palace. The palace has mainly two stories and a traditional Kerala “Naalukettu”. The palace is marked by high roofs, thick walls, large rooms and Italian marble flooring. The construction and interiors are done so tastefully and comfortably that it remains cozy irrespective of weather conditions. Anyone who visits the palace will come to know that the rulers of Mysore have also stayed in this grand palace. In fact, the great ruler Tipu Sultan is believed to have set up a flag mast in front of the palace, which can be seen even today. The palace also has a serpent grove, locally known as “Sarpakaavu”, which has been worshipped since ancient times. Serpent worship is almost a ritual in Kerala and has been practiced since many centuries. The palace also houses a museum that has collections like ancient bronze sculptures and statues and ancient manuscripts.
