This Beach of Tamil Nadu is also known as Kaveripoompattinam and is about 40 km from Chidambaram in Tamil Nadu. The Cauvery River drains into the Bay of Bengal at Poompuhar. Poompuhar Beach is an ancient historic town situated in Sir kali Taluk of Nagapattinam district, Tamil Nadu. An archaeologist delight, Poompuhar is a town for those who like to wander amidst history and take a stroll through time. It was once a major port during the reign of Cholas. Poompuhar Beach is filled with black sand and is an ideal picnic spot. It has a monument engraved with a bathing scene, which adds to its uniqueness. The beach is unsuitable for swimming because of the roughness of the sea.

Major Attractions of Poompuhar Beach:

The major attraction of Poompuhar Beach is the Silappathikara Art Gallery, which is a seven, tired classically built building, which highlights the history of the place.Another important attraction is the Zion church, which was built by the early Dutch settlers. Along with the church, Poompuhar also has many other Dutch architectural monuments such as the fort and the town gateway.

Visit the number of temples that are found in Poompuhar and around it such as the Thiruppallavaneeswaram temple, which is an ancient structure. The place Poompuhar is also a gateway to Thanjavur and other places nearby.

Thanjavur, the district headquarter is connected to towns/cities like Thiruchi, Chennai and Nagore. Chennai is connected to all the major cities in India by railways.

By Road:

Bus services are available from Thiruchi, Nagore and Chennai for Thanjavur. Various interstate buses also ply from Thanjavur.
