Sinhagad fort Pune
Sinhagad meaning ‘Lion Fort’ Previously called Kondhana. It is a fort located near the city of Pune, Maharashtra, India, situated on a hill which rises 800 meters above the surrounding countryside. The fort’s location has been strategically important since at least the 14th century and has been the site of many important battles. One of the more famous battles was the recapturing of the fort by ‘Tanaji Malusare’, a general for Chhatrapati Shivaji in March of 1670. It was after this battle that the Kondhana fort was renamed ‘Sinhagad’ after Tanaji Malusare, whose nickname was ‘the lion’ (Sinha). Having spearheaded the attack and fighting valiantly Tanaji’s life was lost in capturing this important fort. IYou can see Tanaji’s samadhi on the fort. The bungalows of Lokmanya Tilak and famous Marathi Poet G.D. Madgulkar ( Ga Di Ma ) are also located on the fort. Dev Take – famous tank with sweet and cold water – is popular amongst the tourists. Sweet curd, Buttermilk, Kanda bhaji and Pithle-Bhakari of Sinhagad is the main attraction for the people. The samadhi of Rajaram Maharaj can also be found on this fort. The tower of Doordarshan -Mumbai is also there on Sinhagad. This tower provides reception to Pune region. You can see the Panshet, Khadakwasla and Varasgaon dams and Torana fort also. The view of entire Pune city looks wonderful.Sinhagad is also known as the Lion Fort and is situated around 25 kilometers southwest of Pune on top of a steep hill. This fort is now almost in a finished condition. It was in the year 1670, that Tanaji Malusre, a general of Shivaji climbed the steep hill in dark with his men and defeated the forces of Bijapur. This is also the place where Mahatma Gandhi met another stalwart of Indian freedom struggle, Bal Gangadhar Tilak in 1915 for the first time. Don’t forget to visit this excursion destination.

By Air:
Pune airport is located about 10 km away from the heart of the city, in the Lohagaon area. Taxi charge from airport to city is only Rs 200. Regular, direct flights are available from Pune to many cities in India. The cities Delhi, Chennai, Bangalore and Mumbai are all air connected to Pune. International travellers can get connecting flight from Mumbai International Airport.
By Rail:
Pune is an important railway junction in Indian railway. Good rail networks connect Pune with all other rail junctions in India.
By Road:
Pune is well connected with many of the major cities in Maharashtra by state owned bus services. Private luxury deluxe buses are operated from Pune to many cities in India, including Goa, Mumbai and Hyderabad. Regular frequent bus services are connecting Pune with Mumbai, nearly a distance of 200 km.
