About Sis Ganj Gurdwara:
Sis Ganj Gurdwara in Delhi is built in the honor of Guru Tegh Bahadur, one of the most revered gurus of Sikhism. The Gurudwara was built a century after he was martyred by Sardar Bhagel Singh, a Sikh commander, when the Sikhs became more powerful. The Gurudwara is made of white marble, has several domes with spires for flags and a water body for religious purposes. It took around Rs. 10 lakh and manpower of 4000 people over various stages to complete the Gurudwara. Everyday ‘Langar’ or free food is given to anybody who wishes to eat there. It is made by Sikh devotees who donate their labor for a good cause. Sis Ganj Gurdwara is located in Chandni Chowk, Old Delhi, between Jain Mandir and Town Hall. There is one more Sis Ganj Gurdwara near Ambala in Haryana where Guru Tegh Bahadur’s severed head was kept till cremation. In Sis Ganj Gurdwara you can witness the trunk of the big tree below which the Guru was martyred. The people who go to the Sis Ganj Gurdwara also visit the well in which the Guru used to take his daily bath when he was in prison. Delhi temple Gurudwara Sis GanjGuru Tegh Bahadur was the youngest of the five sons of Guru Har Gobind. He was born in Amritsar in the early hours of 1st April 1621. The name Tegh Bahadur (mighty of the sword), was given to him by Guru Har Gobind after he had shown his valour in a battle with the Mughals. Tegh Bahadur was brought up in the most approved Sikh style. He was trained in the arts of archery and horsemanship and taught old classics. He is taken to be of deep mystical temperament with his prolonged spells of seclusion and contemplation. Guru Tegh Bahadur got married on 4th February 1633 to Gujri. After Guru Har Gobind died, it became difficult for the disciples to know the successor since many imposters were claiming to be the next guru. It was then a merchant called Makhan Shah who wanted to fulfill a private wish of donating 500 gold coins, gave two each to the imposters who accepted them without questioning. He heard about quiet Tegh Bahadur and tried to give him the same but Tegh Bahadur reminded him of the original amount. This revelation made Shah so happy that he ran to the terrace and shout ‘Guru Ladho Re’ meaning ‘I have found the guru’. Guru Tegh Bahadur was executed by Emperor Aurangzeb’s men on the evening of 11th November 1675.
