Theater has always been the poor cousin of movies but not anymore. Established movie actors concede that acting in theatres is tougher than acting in movies and it gives them more creative satisfaction. So, as the school of acting, theatre will never lose its importance. Renowned actors like Naseeruddin Shah, Pankaj Kapoor, Ratna Pathak, Lilette Dubey, Ashish Vidyarthi, Manoj Bajpai, Neena Gupta, Seema Biswas and Piyush Mishra balance their acts between films and plays.
One of the oldest and most prestigious theatres in Delhi is Kamani Auditorium. It is located quite close to Mandi House, the erstwhile cultural hub of Delhi, and is easily accessible. However nowadays with auditoriums all over Delhi and places such as India Habitat Center and India International Center the theater artists have diversified with no longer one place being an epicenter. Kamani has a seating capacity of approximately 632 people and shows plays, concerts, ballets etc almost daily. Interestingly its inaugural recital was presented by none other than the prestigious Carnatic singer M.S. Subbulakshmi.
Siri Fort Auditorium is another jewel in the crown of auditoriums in Delhi. It is one the biggest auditorium complexes in Delhi and artists dream to play there. Located in the Asian Village Complex and has a seating capacity of 2,500 people at one time. It also has a VIP lounge and a well furnished pantry for small purposes.
