About Thirunakkara Mahadeva Temple:
Thirunakkara Mahadeva Temple is a highly revered shrine located in the heart of Kottayam, Kerala. Built by Thekkumkoor Maharaja, this beautiful temple dates back to 500 years ago. The presiding deity here is Lord Shiva. The temple is known for its South Indian style of architecture. The Koothambalam of the temple is considered as the best in the state. The walls of the temples are decorated with beautiful paintings, which are scenes from the Hindu epics. This is one of the famous Shiva temples of Kottayam. It is located in the heart of the town and attracts thousands of devotees every year, especially during the annual festival. The 10 day annual festival is a grand affair, which displays a music and folkdance extravaganza. The festival is called “Aaraattu” and gives you glimpses of Kerala’s traditions, rituals and world famous art forms. You are also bound to see a lot of colour, enthusiasm and elephants in the processions during the fest. The temple is a good example of Kerala style of architecture. The interior murals depict themes of Hindu epics. It was built at the beginning of 16th century by the then Raja of Thekkumkur. Three big festivals are held annually at the temple. Phalguna Utsav, the important festival, is celebrated in the third week of March. Other two are held during Thulam (October-November) and Mithunam (June-July). Kottayam Railway Station and Kottayam Bus Station are the nearest access points.
